Lib Dems win Newport South By-election

Liberal Democrat candidate Mark Wiggin has won the Newport Town Council by-election. Cllr Wiggin gained 36.6% of the vote, beating the Conservative who achieved 29.9%. There was also a Labour candidate and three independents on the ballot, held in the South ward of the town.

"I am very grateful to the people of Newport South for entrusting me to serve as their town councillor," highlighted Cllr Wiggin. "I promise to work for the benefit of all the residents of Newport, whether they voted for me or not."

Cllr Thomas Janke, Chair of Newport Liberal Democrats, expressed his delight at his party's successful defence of the seat on Newport Town Council.

"I would particularly like to thank the other candidates for what was a very clean election campaign," Cllr Thomas Janke highlighted.

Cllr Wiggin has lived in the Newport area all of his life and has a particular attachment to the historic market town.

"Newport is a special place, with a long and honourable history," Cllr Wiggin said. "Members of the Town Council have been known over the years for working together for the benefit of the town, regardless of any political differences they may have. I am looking forward to working together with the Town Clerk and officers, together with other councillors, to ensure that Newport continues to be a vibrant and welcoming place in which to live and work."

Con 192 (29.9%)

Ind 115 (17.9%)

Lab 83 (12.9%)
