Following one of the Conservatives elected to Newport Town Council in May failing to take up his seat, a by election has now been called in the South Ward of the town.

"The local Conservatives put up a candidate whose work prevents him from actually serving," Cllr Thomas Janke said. "They appear to have put party before town, and this will cost taxpayers money".

"I will be proud to serve our town," said Nick Garvey . "I will take up my seat, if elected, and my top priority is tackling the recent spate of anti-social behaviour."

"I am backing Nick Garvey, the candidate with true commitment to Newport," Cllr Sarah Syrda said.
