Town Councillor Thomas Janke has praised the efforts of a husband and wife team in spearheading a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme for Newport.

Nick and Jo Garvey registered the new scheme because they wanted "a safe environment in which to bring up their children, but saw police presence falling in Newport"

"One of the best things about Newport is its community spirit," Mr Garvey explained. "Whilst alert residents are not a substitute for the police, we have a real opportunity to harness this spirit to make our town safer."

Nick and Jo Garvey have obtained signage for the town, and are looking for volunteers to assist in erecting it.

Cllr Janke, a member of the new scheme, said: "Jo and Nick Garvey have done a fantastic job in getting this scheme off the ground. Our local police work extremely hard for our town, but they are a very small team and cannot be everywhere at once."

Nick Garvey is standing for election to Telford & Wrekin Council (Newport North and West ward) and Newport Town Council in May for the Liberal Democrats.
